Personal Awards

Library Director of the Year

Considered annually, this award is given to a current library director who has contributed to the growth and development of their library by providing leadership, inspirations, and creativity to staff, patrons, and trustees. By their abilities, the public library  under the director’s leadership  has succeeded in providing , excellent  service to their library and/or the library community.

Library Trustee of the Year

Considered annually, the Library Trustee of the Year is given to a trustee, past or present, who has significantly benefited their library by the strength of their service. This trustee has provided leadership, creativity, and inspiration while serving on the board and has contributed in a significant manner to the accomplishment of the library's mission.

Library Friend of the Year

Considered annually, the Library Friend of the Year is an individual who has in a significant manner contributed to the value and welfare of their local library, and by doing so, has increased the quality of service provided to all patrons of the library.

Elinor Swaim Distinguished Service Award

Considered annually, the Distinguished Service A ward is given to a person who is not employed by a public library, but who has,  because of their support, contributed in a significant manner to the welfare of public libraries in North Carolina. Nominations will be received by the Awards Committee and forwarded for selection to the Executive Board in consultation with the State Library. 

Lifetime Achievement Award

Considered annually, this award is given to a North Carolina public library director(s) retiring or leaving the public library profession. This individual will have by their creativity, fidelity, leadership, and professionalism, increased the quality of library service to all patrons in their community. This award encompasses the contributions of an individual(s) over an entire career or lifetime.

Benefactor's Award

The Benefactor's Award is given on an irregular basis to an individual who has made a significant financial contribution towards the development of public library service in his community.

Library Champion Award

The Library Champion Award is given on an irregular basis to one or more non-librarian(s), particularly state legislators and other state officials, who pro-actively support  legislation which benefits public libraries in North CarolinaNominations will be received by the Awards Committee and forwarded for selection by the Executive Board in consultation with the State Library.    

Intellectual Freedom Award

The Intellectual Freedom Award is given on an irregular basis to a public library director who has actively contributed to and promoted the cause of intellectual freedom on the local and/or state level.  

 

Publishing Award

The Publishing Award is given on an irregular basis to recognize a publisher who has made a significant contribution to the development of public library collections in North Carolina.
